WINTER STUFF/ TTCSU DISTRO

So I've been working a lot and not drinking, which is a change from working a lot and drinking too much. It's been good for me. I feel more secure and confident in choices I'm making and life in general. Even if it's as basic as going to the grocery store and getting food to make dinner. Shit that I just don't do when I'm hungover and too lazy to do anything except sleep until work.

I've also had more space in my mind for projects that I want to do, like building a new wall in my place and expanding my distro, and jamming with HARI LEGS again. My friend Daniel and I have been working on distro'ing MRR and Razorcake to the unwashed masses of Vancouver. If you are in the city and looking to get your hands on some copies, they are now carried at Spartucus Books, Neptoon Records, Redcat Records and the Zoo Zhop. You can also get them off me or him directly.

ALSO, I just got a bunch of SCAM zines in the mail, which can be acquired through Spartucus & Zoo Zhop as well (and through me directly).

Soooooo thats cool. My tape deck is back in action so I've been making tapes more which rules. Any other sober winter activity suggestions, feel free to send em my way.

Just read a pretty awesome interview with ASILE from Ottawa. Check it out on this Ottawa hardcore blog that I just found out existed:

Also here's another good interview with my boyfriend Kendrick Lamar:

Thats all for now. Be good to yourselves, and stay punk.

Thursday, August 9, 2012

I recently listened to BLINK 182's first two demos, Flyswatter and Demo #2, respectively, for the very first time. Growing up in the mid-to-late '90s, I was exposed entirely to their MuchMusic era, and consequently associated their name with sickly mall-pop songs, videos of ultra clean mall-punks and the dull beige walled existence that was suburban Kelowna (and the mall). My mom bought me Take Off Your Pants  and Jacket for my 15th birthday and it took me at least 6 months before I got the name.

Then I moved into the Alf House, a crisp September in 2004, and met many amazing, inspiring people, one of whom was Miranda. We went out for breakfast, went cruising at the karaoke bar, started a band and wrote songs about beefing up and commuter cyclists, and at some point she got me back into Blink, and I heard Chesire Cat and Dude Ranch, for if not the first, then the most thorough time.

But the first two demos are pretty unique among it all. I'm not a gushing fan, but it's super shitty basement pop punk, just how I like it. Possibly a bit less drum heavy and more melodic than I likeit. It sounds like a band Miranda and I would  have started. Or any of us from that time in the mid-2000s. The ever arbitrary Golden Days.

I've been out of sorts lately, and I forgot that writing shit out is as much self-indulgence as it is self-care. So this is self-care. I feel like my values are falling away from me and being replaced with a brick foundation of indifference, drinking, smoking, stiff muscles and broken hearts. Dealing has turned into breaking down, talking about it has turned into pursed lip smiles, and being okay with it has turned into getting angry drunk.

When does it fucking end? After 25 right? My 26th birthday will be a cold shower of clarity and understanding. Right? I fucking hope so.

But yeah, those first two demos are killin' it on my stereo right now.

FRIDAY NIGHT

It is suuuuuper dead at work, and I figure I should do more than spend the evening hurling insults at my coworkers and eating muffins. I figured this was like productivity. And like productivity it what I like most.

Tomorrow night, May 4th 2012, HERMETIC  is having their LP release at the Artbank, which is a rad space in Vancouver and I am stoked they are doing shows there (most notably the upcoming WILD ASSUMPTIONS (bay area), LOVE CUTS, LOOSE TIGHTS show on May 31st, save the date!).

CHUNG ANTIQUE from Seattle is playing, along with MOVIELAND who are local, but I ain't heard either of em, show check 'em out and form your own opinion.

(Also, if you are reading this and you aren't from Vancouver, and haven't heard PAINTED YOUTH, you should check them out (pre-Hermetic, early 2000s delightful pop punk)

And if that ain't up your canal, you can swim on over to Iron Road, soak up the cigarette smoke, and have suuuuuper cool conversations. Oh yeah, and see HOOPSNAKE & CHAPEL. There are other bands but I ain't that inna them, but again, form your own, etc. The flyer kind of looks like an all-access pass to Ozzfest or something, but AT LEAST THERE IS A FLYER.

I am gonna try and do both. If anyone wants a show calendar for May and is going to be at either of these shows hit me up!

Up the fucking punks!

SEATTLE: I jumped in a van full of NEON PISS on Saturday and it was so fun. Seattle's Black Lodge is an amazing venue, and the show was packed. The bathroom lineup was walled with thumping bass from the bar next door, and you could drink your own beer inside. And pals from Olympia were there!

AGATHA was fucking rad and I didn't buy a record, because sometimes after a couple beers I get really tape stubborn and convince myself I won't and don't need vinyl and damn all that record collecting anyhow. Made-up morals, fabricated ethos. BLOODSWEEP were good, choppy riot grrl, and the bass player had a pink flying V guitar (!!!!). NP played, it was good to see them in a place where you weren't concerned about turning around and seeing creepy guy winking at you, or telling you have nice legs (I don't care what my name is, fuck off with that shit). And the sound was better than at Iron Road in Vancouver. And of course SNUGGLE & RVIVR played and I sang some words I knew, and by this point was drunk enough to sing the ones I didn't know, and it was all lovely lovely lovely.

IN BETWEEN (actually, slightly south of Tacoma): There is a totally sick army surplus in Ft. Lewis!! The last exit, I think. The one with the WA Nat'l Guard giant compound.

TACOMA: The 5th Dimension is fucking badass. And it's in Tacoma?! My vision of that city five years ago was juggalos hanging out at gas stations where you ran in to pee and buy your second sixpack on your way to Portland. Now it is a brilliant backyard and being shitty at darts in the garage with the woodstove and dogs loping around muddy boots. And super fun living room shows. Everyone can see! The ceilings are tall and you can perch on the staircase. And everyone is friendly, and if you're socially anxious can just drink past it all until you are the friendliest socially anxious Canadian the town has ever seen. The show was comprised of HYSTERICS, who are tough as shit ladies from Olympia, who make me want to start a hardcore band and break faces at the same time. NEGATIVE PRESS are good hardcore from Tacoma. The singer has a giant Husker Du tattoo (fucking cool) which he displays by removing his shirt during the set. But good band. But shirts on, dudes off, dude. I think I missed CRIMINAL CODE when I was playing shitty darts.

THE END: Things I have had re-affirmed: Punk is great. The NW is great. Vancouver, Bellingham, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Portland. I still love punk. The border makes anyone feel like they are wrong, all of the time, so fuck the border. I need to hang out more, in my own city and in others, because try as I might, isolation just ain't bringing me up.

If you haven't already, check out Greg from Neon Piss' blog REMOTE OUTPOSTS and check out all the aforementioned bands!

Lendawg created a new online database for stoked punks who like juice and grind. So far pictures from Vancouver's illustrious seawall, and some disturbingly close pictures of juicer'd beets & such, that I totally though was some kind of puke at first.

Stoking is good for your health.
